FON - BENIN Ritual altar in iron alloy covered with ritual substances, formed by a nest of four undulating snakes, symbol of the Vodun DAN, one of the most important of the Fon pantheon of ancient Dahomey (Dan Homey).Two snakes symbolize the male part of Dan, uniting heaven and earth, the other two, females, represent in his role as servant of Hebiosso, god of lightning and thunder. This altar symbolizes the cohesion of life and the unity of couples. Height: 25cm Diameter: 20cm Origin: collected in situ in 1978, village of Agbangizou, Abomey region. Private collection, Paris.
