PHAM HAU (Vietnam 1903-1995) Pagodas in... - Lot 115 - Art-Valorem
PHAM HAU (Vietnam 1903-1995)
Pagodas in a Tonkin landscape
Six panels of polychrome and gold lacquer. Signed with the artist's stamp in the lower right-hand corner with the signature in Chinese characters of the artist Pham Quan Hau and his name in Latin P.Hau.
Executed between 1934 and 1936.
Total dimensions: 105 x 185 cm
Provenance: Acquired by André Affre, director Staca Tourane, car transport company of the Annam centre, between 1935-1937. Then brought back to France in 1945, kept by descendants by the current owner.

Another version with the same dimensions of this lacquer, made around 1936, was presented on November 25, 2017 at Christie's in Hong Kong.
Pham Hau, with his lacquer panels executed between 1935 and 1945, brings the lush Tonkin vegetation of Hanoi into the interiors of collectors. Behind the gold lacquered banana leaves and red lacquered vegetation, the remains of a temple delicately suggested by a gray background are revealed.

We thank Mr Pham Gia Yen, Pham Hau's son and author of the book "The lacquer Art of Pham Hau" for his help in dating and authenticating these panels.
