Ivan Stepanovitch "Mazeppa" (1639-1707) is a semi-legendary character and hero of the Ukrainian nation, who was mentioned by Voltaire in his history of Charles XII, and later by Lord Byron, who wrote a poem about him in 1818. This scene, inspired by the poem of Lord Byron relating the popular legend of Mazeppa,
represents the horse dragging behind him a troop of wild horses. Finally stopped, exhausted from his long race across the steppes of Ukraine, the horse falls at the foot of a giant fir tree. Mazeppa, tied to the horse, lies on the ground with bloody limbs. A stormy sky where a vulture is flying adds to the tragic aspect of the composition. Admirable painting where the virtuosity of the master is found.

The large version of 1825 was painted in Paris after his return from his directorship in Rome.
Exhibited in Paris, galerie Lebrun, 1826 and at the salon of 1827. Purchased from Mr. Duchesne by the Direction des Musées (Maison du Roi) on February 25, 1832, for 10 000 francs (Paris, A. N., O4 1427, mandate n°103) presented at the Palais des Tuileries; deposited at the Assemblée Nationale on October 12, 1848; a letter from M. P. Jabaud, director of the service of the real estate affairs and of the patrimony of the Assemblée Nationale dated May 5, 2003 indicates that the work was destroyed in the fire of March 24, 1961 at the Assemblée Nationale.
