Jean BLAEU. Théâtre des états de son altesse... - Lot 1 - Art Valorem
Jean BLAEU. Théâtre des états de son altesse royale le duc de Savoie, Prince de Piémont, Roy de Cypre La Haye, Adrian Moetjens, 1700. 2 volumes large in-folio, red morocco, triple fillet on the boards, spines with 10 nerves very nicely decorated, gilt edges (Binding of the time). Brunet, V-771 / Perret, II-10487 /// I. (9f.)-129 / II. (5f.)-183-(1f.). First French edition of this superb work dedicated to Piedmont and Savoy. The original edition had appeared in Latin, in Amsterdam, in 1682, with the heirs of Blaeu. It is illustrated with a very important iconography which consists of 2 frontispieces drawn by Glaeiresse, engraved by Blooteling and Valck, 3 portraits among which the one of Victor Amédée II drawn by Bourdin engraved by Gunst, the one of Charles Emmanuel II by Nanteuil and the one of Marie Jeanne Baptiste of Savoy drawn by Laurent Du Sour, engraved by Nanteuil, 2 title vignettes, 2 headbands, 2 initials, 60 caps, some of them repeated, and 135 plates out of text, sometimes on double page or folding, including a plate of coats of arms, one of genealogy, 3 maps, 3 plans and 127 plates of city views, sometimes as the crow flies, palaces and buildings, architectural motifs, most of these engravings are not signed. There are notably views of Annecy, Chambéry, Evian, Thonon, Montmélian, Bonneville, La Roche, Nice, Villefranche Perret wrongly announces 142 plates for the 140 described here which correspond perfectly to the 2 tables placed at the end of the volume. A splendid copy in red morocco of the period, very rare condition. The copy bears some ghostly coats of arms on the boards. These have been very neatly erased at an old time, perhaps during the Revolution, when the arms on the volumes, sign of a noble belonging, condemned these volumes to be mutilated by the imbecility and savagery of men. Minimal defects to the bindings with small color variations on the boards due to a retouching probably done after the arms were erased, marginal tear to a frontispiece not reaching the engraving, minimal blemishes and a few pages slightly browned.
